Kids find the sensation associated with a pooping totally different to a pee. This is why it always takes longer to train them to do that in the potty. The fear of "letting go" of a poo is alien and scary and they avoid it for as long as possible.

Think about it; for the first two years' of their lives they do them mostly in a prone position (as a baby) or standing upright (as a toddler). Then we ask them to forget all that, and sit on a potty.

I think it's natural. I have heard of many, many toddlers at your son's age who have this problem. My daughter is only 2 and is potty trained but also has a big problem pooping on the toilet. My daughter will actually get upset and be near tears when she is trying to poo and I put her on the potty.
However, I try not to ever push her. The more you push it the more they will resist. I talk to her while she is sitting on the toilet. I hold her hand and let her know it's ok and that she is doing amazing by pooping on the toilet.
As yucky as it may sound I let her come in the bathroom sometimes when I go and talk about it with her. Let her know it's normal and that everyone does it. She is slowly becoming more comoftable with it.
Patience is key in this situation. You can't push it and in my opinion you can't be angry abou it either.
I hope it gets easier really soon.

I have tried everything...encouragment, praise, stickers, special treats, McDonald's lunch... and nothing seems to work. I am getting ready to potty train his younger sister since she is now showing signs...asking for a clean diaper, taking of the dirty one and trying to put on a new one. I hope this will make him want to be the first completely trained. I have even told him the first one trained will get a game of their choice and he does not seem all that excited. He is suppose to start school in September, but I don't think he will be going. I am frustrated to the point where I think I should start taking away priveleges and even toys. I am not one to resort to punishing for bad behaviour, but I feel like I am left with no options.

Wow....now that's something~ I haven't heard of that yet, but I will say that a lot of kids (especially boys) have a hard time with going #2 in the potty. My son peed WAY before he would sit down and go #2. I felt like (with my son) that I was pushing him too much. I always heard that a child will go when they're ready, but 4yrs old....
Try hiding the sisters diapers and maybe reintroduce the baby potty .....show it to her and get her interested (IF she's old enough to walk) maybe he'll get jealous and want to do like little sister is doing. Sorry I don't have any better advice....I'm sure you've done the whole treat/Prize ....you know the basic methods to get them interested. Let me know how it goes in a few months...curious to see what happens.

Son won't poop in the potty

Aug 18, 2008 6:55 AM
Hi,
I have a four year old son who refuses to poop in the potty. He will pee in the potty with no reminders or reinforcements plus he is night trained (for the past 6 months). What I don't understand is why he will not have a bowel movement in the toilet. He will take off his underwear, find his sister's diaper, put them on, poop, take them off, throw them in the garbage, wipe his bum, and then wash his hands. How can I get him to have a bowel movment in the toilet.
Thanks in advance for you help.
