I have 2 year old twin boys! We started with potty training right before their 2nd birthday. One is doing pretty good, but the other wants pretty much nothing to do with it. I made a chart on poster board last week. They each have their own. Everytime they go potty they get to put a sticker on that day. I let them go to the store and pick what stickers they liked best. The reward system is working for one, and I think it is starting to pick up with the other one. Now going poo is another story!!! lol That will be much harder!!!!

I am also in the same boat - 21/2 year old little boy with not enough time in the day to stop to pee or poop on the potty. He knows exactly what to do on the potty from undressing and getting on to it and indicates when he needs to go BUT fights the process of getting to the potty. We've tried EVERYTHING. He is fine at his home daycare and does so without issue but at home it's a battle. We try very hard for this not to happen.

As daycare suggested, we tried cloth underwear but he just goes in them - poop on the cream coloured carpeting through his clothing and pee on the sofa! He'd also be fine to stay in it too b/c he fusses when it's time to change him. We explain it would be easier for him and faster to just do it on the potty, wipe, wash and go! HELP with the double-standards needed!!!

Huggies has some wonderful tips for potty training. And a fabulous dvd that was very helpful in potty training my guy.
Specifically we tried when he was 2 put he timing wasn't right for him so we waited. At 2 1/2 yrs old we tried again. 1st letting him see how its done then announcing out loud when we had to go and showing excitement when we went potty & how wonderful to be dry. Then we put him on to try.
we did not use a potty chair but a seat that sat right on top of the big potty so it was better fitted to his bottom.
We sang songs and read books to help him relax. A few times I'd even run water.
I taught him by sitting first cause we just never were sure about what he was going to do Pee or poop. So this way we had both bases covered.
We tried the pull ups but he couldn't realize that he was not suppose to go in these but considered them just like a diaper easier to put on. So we moved right to the potty training underwear. These gave him the wet feeling that he didn't like and encouraged him to put the pee pee where it was suppose to go. In the potty.
WE also shopped. WE looked in the sales papers and let him pick out his reward toy. WE cut out the toy and explained that when we didn't have to buy diapers anymore that we could afford the reward toy when he made all pee pee and poop in the potty. Took 3 weeks and many rounds of take me out the the ball game. LOL. His reward toy was a batting machine by ESPN. He experienced several accidents but always encouraged him that next time he could make it and not have any accidents. Its been 4 months since he's mastered it but we still have almost 1 accident a month. BOYS tend to get too involved in play time and not pay attention to the potty clues. SO watch for that pee pee dance and send them up to the potty. GOOD luck.

When buying underwear start with training underwear they are looser and easier to pull down.

For Andrew I just bought a regular potty nothing special that had the guard on it.
I taught him to sit and pee first.
I did not mess with pull ups, to me they are just like diapers. I bought him some underwear, let him pick them out. I only allowed him to wear them a few times at first jsut so he could get the feel of them. But I did put a diaper on him at night. I then allowed him to be naked bottom down and stressed to him not to pee on the floor. He took to that right away. Poo was a bit harder. He finally went on the potty. When he got all of it down and had no accidents then JR taught him to stand and how to shake.

I hope this offers some help!

Also another bit of advise, if he doesn't take to it right away don't push it. All involved will jsut get frustrated. If it gets to that point lay off and take a break for a couple months.

Now that I am a mother I have found that raising a baby is all common sense.

help, potty training a boy

Mar 14, 2008 3:10 PM

Xaviers' 21 months old, so we want to get started. He currently goes with Dad so he can "see how it's done" but I want to actually get him moving it the right direction. here are my questions:
What type of potty is best for boys?
do you teach him to sit or stand first?
do I move straight to pull-ups or what?
any general advice for a first time mommy?
thanks in advance!
