Re: 17 month old not yet walking

With second children it is not uncommon for them to be slower in walking as when they want something the older child gives it to them so the incentive to walk etc is taken away. It is also not uncommon for larger babies to take their time in walking as they have a larger weight for their legs to lift and it takes longer for the strength to build up. I have noticed with my last baby that he is a lot heavier then my other children and he slower in rolling etc. He too is very long but heavy. He is 19 weeks old and is about 22 pounds or 10 kg but is also over 25 inches. So I am expecting that he will not be crawling at the same age as the others. As he is bum scooting etc I wouldn't be too concerned but is the a childcare nurse in your area who could do a quick assessment to help set your mind at ease? -- Visitor From Aus: DS 13yrs, DD 9yrs, DS 15mth, DS 4mth

I had the opposite happen. My second child walked at 9 months, which I was not ready for. I wanted him to be a "baby" for awhile longer. I guess I was just so busy with his older brother, that he had the space he needed to experiment. I'm one of those hovering parents. I didn't give my first son space at all. I live in Texas and we have a program called ECI for children that are developmentally behing, disabled, etc. They do free evaluations and have therapists that will help the child. It couldn't hurt to try something like that. Once the child is three, you'll have to get help through the school system. My stepdaughter is 5 and my almost 3 year old talks better than her. She's very bright, it's just that it's hard to understand her and for her to communicate. Her mom refuses to get speech therapy for her. That is very frustrating. Do whatever you can to help your child. -- Marlene loves David!!!!!! stepdaughter Raevyn- 6 in May; son Marik- 4 in July; son Jace- 2 in May

17 month old not yet walking

Hi everyone. I have a quick question for you ... did any of you experience with your second child a delay in walking? My 17-month old has no interest in walking ... he bum scoots all over the place - and I have to admit, he's pretty fast. But stand him up to walk, and he says no thank you! My daughter was way different. She was up and running just shortly before 13 months. I'm not quite sure how to get my son up and moving. He's not a big baby, but he's long and strong.
