My baby girl started finger painting with those great Crayola paints when she was just 5 months old. My twins were 18 months at the time. They made artwork with the fingerpaints and we framed them for Christmas gifts for all of our family members. Their footprints, handprints, and just streaks of paint made masterpieces and they were all less than 2 years old. : )
Finger painting and any other type of coloring or art is so important for cognitive development and in so many other areas! It is suggested that as soon as your child is able to sit up and wave his/her hands around is the age to start with art projects. Just remember to make them fun and not about the art! Also, I have a degree in Child Development and they say that coloring with crayons is much better for young children than coloring with markers. Crayons require just enough pressure to develop the child's muscles without over-doing it while markers require almost no muscle. But like I said, any type of art can be fun for a child! Just find a medium that fits what your child seems to enjoy the most and then mix things up once in a while!
When CKS was six months old I mixed some baby applesauce with food coloring and let her "paint" with that.
I work in a day care in the infant room 6wk- 1 yr I help my 9 month olds finger paint they absolutely love it. You can get non toxic that way if it ends up in the mouth wont hurt them a bit. I think its a great idea to finger paint help with crayons markers anything you can think of. It helps stimulate there brain and sensory's. Plus its just fun what kid doesn't like making a mess. Also try shaving cream in a zip lock bag. Must supervise but its a big hit.
